    Located on the southern coast of Cyprus, halfway between the towns of Limassol and Paphos, Columbia Beach Resort seemingly provides the ideal retreat from which to explore the area. Not usually one to opt for big, secluded resorts, Coralie Modschiedler puts the hotel to the test.<br />
The warm breeze that greets me as I step off the plane at Larnaca airport couldn’t be more welcoming. Summer at last. One hour’s drive later and we’re finally reaching the grand entrance of the Columbia Beach Resort. Attentive staff immediately take our luggage and escort us to reception, where a fruity champagne cocktail and our room key await.<br />

    The resort is huge – it’s got 94 suites, two restaurants, its own beach and even a small chapel – but it somehow manages to feel intimate. This effect is largely created by the cleverly spread-out, low-rise stone buildings and terracotta roof tiles that give the place a Cypriot-village feel. For the real thing, Pissouri village is just minutes away, perched on the cliffs above the bay. Small and charming, it’s got a few restaurants and cafés worth checking out, as well as stunning views of the Mediterranean coastline.</div>

However, Canada also has its fair share of unsavoury history. Indigenous peoples (including the Inuit of the far north and members of Canada's First Nations) maintain that traditional lands were taken from them by force or subterfuge by previous governments. There have been some small measures to tackle their grievances: in 1993, a land claim settlement gave the Inuit control over a 350,000 sq km (135,135 sq miles) area of the Northwest Territories; in 1999, the federal government created the new territory of Nunavut from these and additional lands. <br />
There is certainly room in Canada to accommodate these peoples: despite Canada's gigantic size, the country is sparsely populated. Most people congregate around urban centres; venturing into more remote rural areas, you may well have only the country's stunning scenery as your companion. Indeed, Canada is so beautifully diverse that it's easy to comprehend why so many people fought for possession of it. <br />

The Americans made a number of efforts to seize control of Britain's Canadian territories after Britain's defeat in the American War of Independence, but failed. Canada governs itself independently but still has the British monarch as its head of state, with relatively little dissent. Four Travel Buddies You Want to Avoid

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><div closure_uid_e42xmg="123" closure_uid_y6ppu4="112" id="body">You might think you already know this guy or girl.  You know the stereotypes.  We have the stinker, snorer, snoozie-nooner, party guy, captain go-go-go, no-doe, and the travel guru to name a few.   Great, but I'm not talking about any of them.<br />
I'm talking about a different kind of travel buddy that you will want to avoid at all cost.  I'm talking about something so opportunistic that it gives a whole new meaning to the word "mooch".  These guys aren't your buddy at all.  These guys are true parasites.<br />
1.) <strong><em>Giardia Lamblia</em></strong> - Topping our list as one of the most common is this guy.  He might have you go-go-go but it's always to the same place, the toilet.<br />
Somewhere along the trail you came into contact with infected feces, ut-oh.  Most likely it was in the form of contaminated food or water.  The Route of infection, fecal-oral - eww!<br />
If your traveling in developing countries where poor sanitary conditions, water quality control and overcrowding are prevalent then you are at increased risk.<br />
Also at risk are campers and backpackers.  This is particularly true in mountainous regions where streams can be infected with human or animal waste and carry Giardia cysts (resting stage).  Always treat your water.<br />
Once you ingest the cysts the acid in your stomach activates the cysts and releases trophozoites (active form of parasite in your body).  From this point it's all fun and games for the parasite as it attaches to your small intestine and starts to reproduce.  As you pass feces it now contains more cysts waiting to reinfect another.<br />
In the meantime you are blessed with sudden explosive foul smelling diarrhea, excessive gas, bloating, abdominal pain, nausea, tiredness and loss of appetite.  When you think about the parasites method of infection your symptoms are great for its survival and desired goal to find more human hosts.<br />

2.)  <strong><em>Leishmaniasis, Cutaneous</em></strong> - This next one is going to have you feeling like the stinker.  Why?  Because once people catch site of your ugly lesions they are gonna avoid you like the plague.<br />
This travel buddy can be picked up in southern Europe as well parts of the tropics and subtropics.  According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), over 90% of the world's cases of CL occur in eight countries: Afghanistan, Algeria, Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Syria (Old World); and Brazil and Peru (New World).  Over 75% U.S. civilian cases are acquired in Latin America, including popular tourist destinations such as Costa Rica.<br />
Travelers at increased risk for CL include adventure travelers, bird watchers, ecotourists, missionaries, Peace Corps volunteers, soldiers and anyone doing research outdoors particularly at night.<br />
The vector-borne culprit is an infected female phlebotomine sand fly.  Risk for infection is highest from dusk to dawn as they are night feeders.  Although less active in the day, they may bite unsuspecting hikers that brush against tree trunks or other resting places.<br />
The event of infection can go completely unnoticed.  Sand flies make no buzzing noise, are about 1/3 the size of mosquitoes and don't have a wicked mean bite.  It's what comes after that will remind you of your friendly new travel buddy.<br />
<strong>Preventive Measures for Travelers</strong> -  Reduce contact with sand flies.  Avoid outdoor activities especially during the hours from dusk till dawn.  Wear protective clothing and barriers.  Use a repellent with DEET.<br />
<strong>Fun History</strong>- That was the good kind.  Visceral leishmaniasis, also known as kala-azar or black fever is the most severe form of leishmaniasis.  If left untreated it will certainly cause death.  Here's the bad news,  the World Health Oganization reports that in southern Sudan, "the number of cases from September 2009 until now is more than six times higher than in 2007-08." and "more than 6,000 people have been infected and over 300 have died in the last year."<br />
3.)  <strong>Malaria - genus: <em>Plasmodium</em> -</strong> The good old standby.  If you travel abroad, come home and fall ill everyone will be quick to say "you probably have Malaria".  So do you?<br />
According to the CDC there are about 1,500 cases of Malaria in the U.S each year, mostly from returned travelers.  Sub-Saharan Africa travelers are at the greatest risk for both getting malaria and dying from the infection.  However, any country where malaria is present results in a risk for travelers.<br />
A great tool for you to use is the <a href="http://cdc-malaria.ncsa.uiuc.edu/" rel="nofollow" target="_new"><span closure_uid_y6ppu4="146" style="color: #660000;">CDC Malaria Map Application</span></a><span style="color: #660000;">.</span>  Users can search a interactive map and get information about malaria endemicity in any particular region.  What's great is it recommended medications for malaria prevention for that particular area.<br />
Mosquitoes are the culprit carrying the parasite that causes Malaria.  Mosquitoes are also the thing you want to avoid to avoid picking up this new travel buddy.  Can you imagine that, heading out camping realizing there was a real legitimate risk of contracting Malaria.  People in the States often joke, "Probably got Malaria" after being bit a bunch but we don't really think we have it.<br />
But what if the circumstances are right?  You were in a high risk area, you got bit by mosquitoes.  Did you know you could come down with symptoms up to a year later.  Anyone that has traveled abroad should seek immediate medical attention up to a year after any possible exposure if symptoms present.  Malaria is always a serious illness and sometimes deadly.  Symptoms of Malaria include fever and a flu like illness.<br />
<strong>Preventative Measures for Travelers</strong> -   Avoid contact with mosquito bites through the usual means including protective clothing, repellents, insecticide treated bed nets, etc.  If you know you are traveling into a high risk area you should consider bringing malaria prevention medicines.  Consult the Malaria information by country table list to see the CDC-recommended options.<br />
Bringing your own medicine will give you some peace of mind and in the event you are diagnosed with Malaria abroad.  This will ensure you have immediate access to an appropriate high quality anti-malarial treatment plan.  Not doing so could leave you in a bad situation.  In some countries where Malaria is present it is not unheard of to receive counterfeit or sub-standard drug treatment.<br />
<strong>Fun History</strong> - The word "malaria" comes from the Italian <em>mala aria</em>, and means "bad air." It was believed that malaria was actually caused by breathing in bad air-namely, foul vapors emanating from swamps, latrines, and so on. The stagnant water provided a breeding ground for mosquitoes which was actually the responsible culprit capable of spreading the parasite.<br />
4.)  <strong><em>Ascaris lumbricoides</em></strong>- This is the largest nematode (roundworm) that can parasitize the human intestine and it's also the most common.  This thing can actually grow 5 to 35 inches long and produce more than 200,000 eggs per day inside the body.<br />
Infection occurs worldwide but is most common in tropical and subtropical areas.  Developing countries where sanitation and hygiene are poor result in higher risk.<br />
Ascaris Infection occurs when a person accidentaly ingest ascaris eggs found in soil.  Common routes of infection include contaminated food or touching your mouth with your hands after coming into contact with the eggs.<br />
Once in the small intestine the eggs hatch into immature worms.  The larvae migrate to the lungs and then to the throat where they are swallowed. When they reach the intestines they develop into adult worms.  The adult female is responsible for laying eggs which will eventually pass into ones feces.<br />
Symptoms can be mild (adominal discomfort) to none.  Slow weight gain or growth is often associated with Ascaris infection.  If your thinking this sounds like a great way to lose way think again.  Heavy worm infections have been known to cause a intestinal blockage.<br />
<strong>Preventative Measures for Travelers</strong>- Telling you to avoid contact with soil that may contain human feces sounds redicoulous but make sure you do this.  If possible don't deficate outdoors.  Always dispose of diapers properly.  Wash hands with soap and water before handling food and avoid any food that may be contaminated with soil.  Wash, peel or cook your food throughly before consumption.<br />
<strong>Fun History</strong>-  Has anyone heard of the  new weight loss craze in Hong Kong?  Apparently, certain Chinese-language websites have been promoting the use of products that contain Ascaris worm eggs with the promise of fast weight loss.  Did you see what I said at the start of this article, these things can grow up to 35 inches long.  Don't do It!<br />
Aside from the obvious gross factor these worms can cause serious complications including death.  No more needs to be said.<br />
<strong>BONUS BUG)</strong> <strong>Bed Bugs (<em>Cimex lectularius)</em></strong> - These guys are the real travel gurus.  If they talked you would likely get a earful of how they traveled harder, further and just plain better then you ever did.<br />
You would likely hear stories of how they hopped one backpack in a crowded metro car to another and then got a free stay in a 4 star hotel after two nights bumming in some filthy flat.  The next day they decided to travel again with some complete stranger they picked up in bed and ended up on a 7 day cruise.  Not ready to go home yet they hopped bags at luggage in the airport and were on their way to Tahiti.  Wow, What a life.<br />

You don't want the frustration however to ruin the mood of the trip. Traveling with a group of people can actually be a lot of fun if you take into consideration all the different types of people you will be traveling with.<br />
If you happen to be the person that is the one planning this trip it's probably a really good idea if you talk to the different people that will be in your group to see what their personal preferences might be. You could always make up a short informational question sheet and ask all of them to fill it out for you so that you can better cover everyone's needs. After all, you don't want to plan on a trip to a theater to see a musical if the majority of your group are super big sports fans.<br />
It's also a very good idea for you to come up with some sort of system that is fair to everyone. Everyone should be assigned different responsibilities while on the trip. For instance if there is going to be different places that you'll be driving then there should be a couple of people who are chosen to be in charge of all the driving. Certain rooms should go to certain people, where someone might want to sit on a bus, in a van or on a train all might seem trivial but to the person who has certain preferences it might not be so trivial to them. Everyone needs to be comfortable and happy on their trip.<br />
If your trip isn't already a discounted travel package then you might want to check where you are thinking of staying if they offer any kind of group discounts or if there are discounts for certain times of the week. Whatever you can think of feel free to ask, they can only say no.<br />
No matter who you are or where you go it's always a good idea to remember the rule to treat everyone the same way you would expect them to treat you. So make sure that if someone is sleeping not to talk too loud or don't be rude, whatever it is that might annoy you, may be the same things that annoy them so always remember this.<br />

For example everyone should know at all times where their own passports are and they need to make sure that they take care to protect their wallets so that they don't end up being broke on the trip because they lost it or it got stolen.<br />
It's important that throughout the entire trip that you respect the possibility that people you are traveling with are going to want some private time, so remember to respect that. It's also a good idea if you request for your own alone time as well. Even the best of friends and closest of relatives can feel like there's just a bit too much togetherness going on and want some time to themselves.</div>

For those who love walking, USA holidays are absolutely ideal. There are so many fantastic places to explore all over the country, not least in the excellent national parks, that you will be spoilt for choice. One of the most famous hikes that you can experience for yourself is Angels Landing in the Zion National Park in Utah. Here is a brief guide to the hike.<br />
<strong>Angels Landing</strong><br />
Angels Landing is a massive rock formation standing 368 metres high. This impressive and imposing natural monument has attracted walkers for decades, and in 1926 a trail was cut into the rock to allow people to go up to the top to experience the great views for themselves.<br />
The trail is 2.4 miles long, and is beautiful, thrilling, and can also be challenging. It is not generally considered to be suitable for children, and if you've got a fear of heights then stay well away! The path can be intimidating in places, with sheer drop-offs on each side, so take care when you set off walking. USA authorities always recommend taking suitable hiking gear and being very vigilant at all times.<br />
<strong>The Hike</strong><br />
For walking enthusiasts who visit Angels Landing to go walking, USA park authorities state that you will probably need about four or five hours on average to go up and down. The whole trip is about five miles, which doesn't seem very long until you consider that most of it is quite strenuous, even though the trail is well maintained.<br />
From where you start at Grotto Picnic Area, the first two miles are paved and well maintained, but the last half a mile is a narrow sandstone ridge with sheer drops - some sections have support chains to offer assistance. Make sure you set off fairly early in the day to ensure that you complete the trail by nightfall.<br />
You'll experience some lovely woodland in the early stages, and although most of the walk is exposed to the sun you'll find shade at Refrigerator Canyon. One of the trickiest parts is Walter's Wiggles, where you will have to zig-zag to Scout Lookout, and from here you will be greeted with incredible views over Zion Canyon.<br />
You will then head along Angels Landing Trail, with sheer cliffs on both sides, until you reach the summit. From here you will experience some truly incredible panoramic views across every direction.<br />

The former British trading post and colony has carved a unique niche for itself in its two short centuries of existence, nowadays offering a vivid combination of ultra-modern skyscrapers, remnants of tropical rainforest and colourful ethnic urban areas, each with a character very much of their own.<br />
One of the most noticeable features of this tiny but bustling city-state is its cleanliness - indeed, it is sometimes criticised for its many seemingly petty regulations, such as the banning of chewing gum - but crime is virtually unknown, and it is one of the world's safest places to visit.<br />
Despite its rather sanitised reputation, though, Singapore is anything but dull. The visitor is spoilt for choice, for things to see and do, and in terms of vibrant nightlife, its rich cultural mix, and a whole planet's worth of culinary experiences.<br />

Numerous marvelous churches of various styles and epochs will shock you with its magnificence. First of all, these words concern Notre Dame de Paris.<br />
<br />
<strong>The Louvre.</strong> One of the most famous symbols of Paris is the Louvre. It's the former royal palace, which in 1793 was turned into the world-famous museum. Its fame the museum got first of all due to the rich collection of the greatest art works, including the Mona Lisa (La Joconde) and the Venus de Milo statue. The Louvre has a great number of well-known paintings and sculptures of different epochs (till the 19th century). There takes place eastern, Greek, and Roman art. A great part of the exposition creates the Egyptian collection and the paintings by the French, Italian and Flemish artists of the 14th-19th centuries. On Visiting the Louvre and creating a full impression of what art is you'd better spend day or two. Otherwise you'll see only a small part of the exposition and will be just overloaded with information. The Louvre is not only a museum, but a marvelous historical building and a part of the French cultural heritage.<br />
<br />
<strong>The Tuileries Gardens.</strong> Not far from the Louvre takes place the Tuileries Gardens, a splendid place for having some walk. In the 17th century Jean-Baptiste Colbert entrusted his landscape architect to make this place beautiful and attractive. Even nowadays the garden has some charm of those times. If you go through the park, you'll find yourself at the Place de la Concorde, decorated with the giant Egyptian obelisk of the pharaoh Ramses II. If you go a little bit further, you'll get to the Place Vendome with its numerous jewelry stores.<br />

<strong>The Royal Palace</strong>. In front of the northern wing of the Louvre takes place the Royal Palace. It was built in 1871 by the order of the cardinal Richelieu. During the Commune de Paris of the 1871 the palace got through the fire. In 1875 the restoration works started, and when everything was ready the council of state, the constitutional court and the ministry of culture started to take place there. The amazing arcades of the Royal Palace encourage visiting the antique shops, which are situated around 242 striped columns. It's a real pleasure to have a rest in the garden, founded by Richelieu.<br />
<br />
<strong>The Eifel Tower.</strong> The Eifel Tower, built for the world's fair of 1889, is a real symbol not only of Paris, but of France on the whole. From the top of the tower, which is 307 meters tall, one can enjoy the marvelous view on the city. If to get on foot over 350 or 700 stairs, you'll find yourself only at 1st (57m) or 2nd (115m) platform. That's why it's more reasonable to use the elevators. At the bottom of the Eifel Tower the Champ de Mars is situated. It was used for war games and parades. On the 14th of 1790 at the Champ de Mars the first French constitution was adjured. Nowadays it's a cozy park for having quiet walks. </div><div closure_uid_3uact5="337"><br />

Coupled with this is a profound sense of cultural concoction, Pakistan once being home to several ancient civilisations, and witness to the rise and fall of dynasties.<br />
In ancient times, the area that now comprises Pakistan marked the farthest reaches of the conquests of Alexander the Great. It was also the home of Buddhist Ghandaran culture. It was the independence of India in 1947 that catalysed Pakistan's nationhood. Under pressure from Indian Muslims, the British created a separate Muslim state. Originally, it consisted of two parts, East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and West Pakistan (now a single unitary state).<br />
